The number of dengue cases in the state has gone up significantly in the recent past. Around 1,000 people were found to have contracted the disease in June alone.
A total of 759 dengue cases were reported from January till May-end. However, the number shot up to 1,033 in June with most of the cases being detected in Mysuru, Mandya, Udupi, Davangere and Chitradurga districts.
The tally stands at 546 in July (till date).
Dengue is a vector-borne disease spread by the mosquito aedes aegypti, mostly found in stagnant water.
“The weather in June and July is conducive for mosquitoes to lay eggs and that is why there has been an increase in the number of dengue cases,” said Health Department director Dr P L Nataraj.
He said the department had launched various programmes to check the mosquito menace in order to contain spread of dengue.
