Among the 100-odd couples, who tied knot at ‘Shubharambha’, a couple was the centre of attraction. Suma (name changed), a BA graduate from Ramanagar, married Shivaraja (name changed), a specially abled from the same place.

Suma told reporters, “I am marrying Shivaraja because of his optimistic, helping and caring nature, not because of sympathy.”

How they fell in love is an intriguing story that seems straight out of any sandalwood potboiler. Suma, who works as a counsellor with an NGO, was working for the welfare of physically challenged when she met Shivaraja five years ago. Shivaraja’s legs were impaired since birth. Initially, Suma was helping out Shivaraja as part of her work l.  As the days passed, she was impressed by his talents, especially his ability in General Knowledge and caring nature towards others.

Shivaraja feels lucky to marry Suma, whom he credits for giving a new lease of life. They belong to different communities  and yet braved the odds that came their way.

Reluctant to recall the unsavoury incidents, Suma said she managed to convince her parents. “I have my own thoughts and dreams in life. I always wanted to serve the disabled,” Suma said.

The couple want to lead an independent life. They have also planned to set up their own business. They were thankful to the district administration for providing a platform to marital bliss.
