The applications seeking residential site pending before the Mandya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) since the past five years are almost 30,000. However, MUDA has not been able to develop even a single site over this period.
In 2007, MUDA invited applications, only to survey if there was a demand for sites in the city. It got overwhelming response and received 29,880 applications and Rs 1.76 crore was collected as registration fees, which has been deposited in the Allahabad Bank.
For 15X24 metre sites 687 persons have applied by depositing Rs 2,000 each. Similarly, for 12X18 m sites 4,380 people have deposited Rs 1,200 each, for 9X12 m sites 14,966 persons have deposited Rs 600 each and for 6X9 m sites 9,847 have deposited Rs 200 each.
MUDA had plans to develop new residential layouts at Kirgandur, Kyathumgere, Guthalu and Halahalli on the outskirts of the city. So the authorities convened a meeting of the land owners in the above said villages in 2011. As per the government rules, the MUDA develops sites at its own cost and has rights over 60 per cent of the sites while 40 per cent is alloted for the original land owners. But, the land owners — farmers — have not shown any interest.
However, MUDA commissioner Shivaramu said, a proposal has been sent to the state government seeking permission to acquire the lands in question.
