Students of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) emerged as the runners-up in the third edition of ‘GE Edison Challenge’ held at the John F Welch Technology Centre (GE JFWTC), Bangalore recently.
The event, which was held at GE’s largest multi-disciplinary research centre (outside US) saw the SJCE team comprising Aparna Shekhar, Amith N, Karan Hiremath and Vishal Kumar proposing practical, simple and cost effective solutions for containing infant mortality rate in rural India.
Design
Their design incorporating treatment facilities for hypothermia and infant jaundice using simple light-bulbs and LED lights was awarded ` one lakh as cash prize. As a part of the challenge, students were required to study Community Healthcare Centre’s in villages with population of 500 people or more and understand their challenges. IT BHU won the competition and received a prize money of `5 lakhs.
70 teams
Around 70 teams from some of India’s leading technical schools registered to showcase their solutions at the Edison Challenge 2010.
The 10 finalists included 5 teams from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, IIT Mumbai, SJCE, Mysore and two teams from Sastra University, Thanjavur. said a release.
