The works of the Mandya Urban Development Authority (MUDA), which plays a major role in planning and developing the city, has been affected due to a shortage of staffers. Only less than 50 per cent of the posts sanctioned have been filled so far.

A total of 25 different posts have been sanctioned for MUDA, while only 12 are filled, 13 remain vacant. Due to the absence of necessary staff, at MUDA, the pace of works is lagging.

MUDA developed Sahukar Channaiah Layout in 1989, Sathanur Layout in 1990 and Vivekananda Layout in 1997. Among the three layouts, houses have been constructed only at Sahukar Channaiah Layout, while the remaining two layouts are yet to see full development.

Due to lack of maintenance, weeds have started growing in the layouts. MUDA invited tenders for jungle cutting in the layouts, and the works have started recently. No new layouts have been developed in the past 17 years, while more than 25,000 people have applied for sites with the MUDA. Allegations

To add to the woes of the authority, an employee in the accounts section was suspended recently on allegations of embezzlement of funds. The absence of adequate staff has also delayed the presentation of MUDA budget.

MUDA Commissioner K Mathai said, a proposal has already been sent to the State government to fill the vacancies.
