The 10 medical colleges in the State have a total of 431 vacancies among the teaching faculty, and 3,488 in the non-teaching category.
Bangalore Medical College has a shortage of 92 teaching staff. The total number of posts sanctioned for the college is 462. Of them only 370 have been filled up. Under the non-teaching category, a total of 1,121 posts are vacant in the college.
Among government colleges, only Mysore (MMC) and Belgaum Medical Colleges have more than the sanctioned strength. According to details furnished by Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda in the Legislative Council, the MMC has 261 members of teaching staff, against the total sanctioned 201 posts; Belgaum college has 87 members of teaching staff, as against 85 posts sanctioned. Mysore College has 560 vacancies in the non-teaching category.
All six newly-established six medical colleges in Mandya, Hassan, Shimoga, Raichur, Bidar and Belgaum have lesser staff than the sanctioned number. Mandya Medical College has only 27 members of teaching staff against the sanctioned 212 members, while Hassan college has only 68 as opposed to the 233 approved posts.
