The Department of Collegiate Education has decided to hold classes from 8 am in government first grade colleges with immediate effect. The move has not gone down well with students and lecturers.

The department issued a circular on Thursday stating that in the academic interest of students and for better administration, classes in government degree colleges should start at 8 am and end at 3.30 pm, with immediate effect. Lecturers feel this would affect students who reside far away.

Dr H Prakash, president of the first grade government degree college lecturers’ association, said, “Our students usually don’t live in the same area so they have to travel an hour or more to reach college. If classes start at 8 am, they will have to leave their home before 7 am.”

Prakash, however, said that teachers would not face any trouble. Darshan, a student at a government college in Bengaluru, said, “In my class, there are many students who come from places like Kolar and Chikkaballapur. They will end up missing the first class and if it is a lab session, it will be difficult for them keep up.” Earlier, classes were held from 10 am to 5 pm.
