Congress MPs from Karnataka on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the Cauvery issue and convene a meeting of chief ministers of the basin states immediately, to settle the row amicably.

“We have requested the prime minister to intervene in the matter immediately, call a meeting of the chief ministers and give directions to settle the Cauvery water dispute amicably,” Muddahanume Gowda, the Lok Sabha member from Tumakuru constituency told reporters after the 11 MPs made a representation to Modi.

The MPs submitted separate memorandums to the prime minister and Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti.

In the representation, the MPs informed the prime minister that Karnataka had been making sincere efforts to comply with the February 5, 2007, order passed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. But the Tamil Nadu government had taken the matter to the Supreme Court, which was unwarranted.

The MPs, from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue on the Parliament premises against the Supreme Court order on the Cauvery issue.
