State to push for implementation of IT in educationTask force formed under Karnataka Jnana Ayoga

The Higher Education department is working towards making Karnataka the national leader in the implementation of information technology in education, said Bharat Lal Meena, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, here on Saturday.

He was addressing a workshop on ‘Technology in Higher Education’, via a video link, held at Senate Bhavan, University of Mysore premises.

Noting that institutions of higher education did have access to information technology tools, he said that steps would be taken to inter-link the IT facilities available at these institutions. In the process, the IT facilties will be standardised and the interlink will ease both administrative and academic activities.

He said that the task force on Educational Technology for Higher Education in Karnataka and EduSat Utilisation Review (ET-EUR), formed under Karnataka Jnana Aayoga (KJA) was working towards optimising the IT facilties at educational institutions. The State, which is also known as the Silicon Valley of the country, could easily top the country in using Information and Communication Technology in education, he said.

Member of the ET-EUR task force, P B Suresh said that while pushing forward for IT in higher education, importance of quality faculty and formal class education system, must be recognised.

Acknowledging the importance of the system was also necessary, he said.

He said that the task force was assessing issues pertaining to the use of technology in the State today. Following the assessment, the task force would recommend the necessary steps required to improve the usage of technology and make it more accessible to the student population.

With the boom in IT, he said that internet has been flooded with self-instructional digital materials, computer aided assessment systems, audio and video instruction materials and others. These material could also be used as important tools in imparting education, he added.
