The 18 fishermen from Karnataka who unknowingly entered the Iranian waters four months ago continue to be detained in the middle eastern country.

The state government has now reached out to the Centre, seeking its intervention.

In a letter dated November 19, Minister for Revenue R V Deshpande has appealed to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, to ensure the release of the fishermen.

“As per the information provided by the fishermen, hailing from Bhatkal and Kumta taluks in Uttara Kannada district, they unknowingly entered the Iranian waters and were apprehended by the Iranian Navy on July 27. The fishermen, who work for a Dubai-based fishing boat, have been under detention at Kish Island in Iran. All 18 fishermen hail from poor, backward families, without any educational background. They have no other vocation except fishing. Their family members are worried for their safety. As they are in a helpless position, it is our duty to make efforts for their release on humanitarian grounds,” the letter reads.
