A stone inscription, believed to be dating back to the period of Devaraya I of Vijayanagara empire, has been found at Haroorumakki at Haroor village in the taluk.
Sringeri National Sanskrit College History Professor M A Prabhakara has discovered the inscription, which is said to be a four foot tall and two foot wide ‘Daana Shashana’ (Charity inscription).
The inscription contains 29 lines. Some letters are faded. The inscription contains Vamana Mudra, images of sun, moon and cattle.
It starts with a hymn ‘Namastunga’ and Saka year 1330 which indicates that the period of the inscription is 1408. It also mentions the titles of Devaraya I. Details related to a donation of a piece of land to Menaseya Bakavaggade and Bommannavaggade are inscribed.
Lord Mallikarjuna on the banks of river Tunga, is mentioned as the witness for the donation.
It also contains a curse for those who demean the righteousness and blessings to those who follow the path of righteousness. The name of the scribe is mentioned as Nadasevabhova Vittana.
The hymns of curse and blessings in Sanskrit are inscribed accurately, Prof Prabhakara said.
