Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar said on Wednesday that basic knowledge of computers and English will be made mandatory in future recruitment of schoolteachers.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said, “the knowledge of computers is essential in the current society. So, we expect aspirants for the posts of teacher to have it, so that the government need not appoint computer teachers separately. Besides, schoolteachers should have basic knowledge of English as it is being taught as a language from Class 1. Those who like to become teachers need to update their knowledge of English and computers,” he said.

The State government will appoint 16,000 teachers in the coming days, he added.Referring to the guidelines issued by the government to all schools in the State to prevent heinous crimes like rape, he said a list of safety guidelines had already been circulated to all schools. It is the duty of the schools to implement them for the safety of students within the given period.

The government will initiate disciplinary action against schools which fail to do this without second thoughts. This is applicable even to government schools, he said.
