Technical glitch hits water release

The State government, which has been releasing 2,000 cusecs of water per day from Krishnarajasagar (KRS) reservoir to Tamil Nadu following Supreme Court direction to release 2.44 tmc feet to the neighbouring state, now finds itself in a “technical problem.”

Two of the three “plus 50” gates of KRS reservoir are under repair and the government is not in a position to increase the outflow even if there is another direction from the Supreme Court.

According to official sources, at the present rate of flow of 2,000 cusec per day, it would take 13 days to implement the Court’s order.

Water can only be released through the “plus 50” gates and not through the crest gates as the water level in the reservoir has dipped to below 80 ft, the sources added.

As the review petition filed by Karnataka will be taken up at the apex court on Monday, there is a possibility for Tamil Nadu to seek a direction to increase the outflow, the sources said.
