Some of the members from a forum fighting for environment conservation in the taluk saved at least 200 huge trees that would have been felled to make way for electric poles by the contractors.

The trees on either sides of Gauribidanur road (between Hirenagavalli cross and Aadegarahalli) were to be felled to erect electric poles. The contractors had already marked the trees to lay cable but the members of an environment forum rushed to the spot and protested against the decision of the contractors. They said that they would not withdraw the protest unless they speak to officers from Forest Department and
Bescom engineers.

When repeated requests to withdraw the protest by contractors did not yield any result, the officers concerned came to the spot.

After a brief argument, the officers gave in to the protesters’ demand and promised to shift the electric poles from the stretch. The protesters, later, withdrew the agitation.
