Siddarmaiah led previous Congress government's flagship programme Indira Canteen has hit rough weather, at Gudibande.

The construction work to house the canteen has been over at Mini Vidhana Soudha. There were plans to launch it either on Gandhi Jayanthi or Kannada Rajyotsava. However, the inauguration has been postponed for various reasons.

After he was elected as the MLA for the first, S N Subba Reddy had assured that he would launch a canteen to provide food at highly subsidised price. He had said that he would fix just Rs 5 for breakfast and lunch.

Encouraged by the success and tremendous response to the programme in Bengaluru, the previous Congress government had announced commissioning of the Indira canteens at every district and taluk headquarters.

After the government's announcement, Reddy dropped the idea as Siddarmaiah announced that his government would commission Indira canteens at all taluk headquarters.

The foundation stone was laid for the canteen 8 months ago and the construction work has also been completed.

A location was identified at the Mini Vidhana Soudha premises. Due to Assembly election, the foundation laying ceremony was conducted in a hurry.

Though the contractor has completed the structure, the utensils and other materials required for the canteen are yet to be shifted.

The MLA has directed the officers to start the canteen before December 15.

"We've instructed the contractor and town panchayat chief officer to take measures in this regard," K Muniraju, tahsildar told DH.

"We will complete the flooring and compound construction at a cost of Rs 7.50 lakh in a week's time," town panchayat chief officer Nagaraju he said.

According to hundreds of labourers, working class and poor people, their dream of consuming quality food at lesser prices should be realised at the earliest.
