The concept of online marketing of agricultural products adopted in Tiptur in Tumkur district has become popular across the State and this will now be implemented in 30 other districts, said R Manoj Kumar, Additional Secretary, National e-market Services, Co-operative Department.

Speaking at the inauguration of the workshop on “Linking farmers to markets- Opportunities and Challenges” at the University of Agricultural Sciences- Bangalore, here on Saturday, Kumar said: “The model exists in five districts and the sale online of coconut and turmeric has picked up very well in Tiptur, Arsikere and Chamarajanagar.

The rates have increased by 120 percent. For instance, coconut which was earlier sold at Rs 4,400 a quintal is now being sold at Rs 11,800 a quintal. This is very helpful for farmers,” he said.

He added that by June- end, the e-market facility will be launched in ten districts including Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur and other surrounding areas. Later, it will be extended to 20 other districts. The aim is to attain a turnover of Rs 10,000 crore from online marketing and sales this year.

Kumar pointed out that the Odisha government had shown interest in emulating this model and the Central government was also getting drawn towards this.
