Traders oppose road widening workOfficials, elected members identify structures to be cleared on VV road

Following the district administration and TMC’s decision to widen Visvesvaraya road, a team of elected representatives and officials inspected the road to identify the buildings and structures that have to be removed at the time of widening.

The team led by the TMC vice-president Chikkanna, standing committee chairman Gowreesh, Tahasildar Rajendra Prasad and others identified the structures. The administration had recently cleared encroachments on this road.

However, this decision has come as a rude shock for residents and traders who had expected that the authorities would lay new footpath aftermath demolition drive.
With strong opposition, laying of new footpath is likely to be delayed. The traders are amused about the district administration’s plans and hoping that it would not encroach into their territory.

According to official sources, the council has planned to make VV Road 60 feet and marked 30 ft on either side from the middle of road. The administration would go for marking on the shops that are be either to be demolished. The shop owners would be asked to remove the extended portion on their own.

However, they also added that the process will take at least a few months. However, shopkeepers would be taken into confidence before taking up any developmental work in the city, the sources added.

The new road would be laid as per standard following increased density of traffic on this stretch of road.

The shop keepers who are apprehensive about the district administration’s steps have expressed their anger at the sudden decision of the TMC to widen the road.
