The government has decided to train about 1.10 lakh college dropouts and fresh graduates to enhance their employability skills, IT&BT Minister Priyank Kharge told the Legislative Council on Monday.

Replying to BJP's Ganesh Karnik, he said IT firms are resorting to retrenchment. Low employability skills and change in visa policy are the reasons for it. Many IT employees have admitted that they require training to master the new technology. The government is planning to conduct industry-specific training programme for such professionals, Kharge said.

“Australia, Singapore and the USA have modified their visa policies. These countries are preferring their own nationals for various jobs, which has resulted in job cuts in India. Technology in automation sector is fast changing, while the corporate sector prefers graduates who have mastered new technology. Techies not just in Karnataka, but all over India are facing job cuts (sic),” he said.

He said only about 7% graduates coming out of colleges have employability skills.
