Tree uproots: 10 houses damaged

It was a great escape for the children and employees at the Anganwadi centre that located on 1st cross, Uppara Beedi, in Chamarajanagar, on Thursday, as a huge tree uprooted and fell on it.

However, 10 houses near the Anganwadi centre were damaged in the impact, and miraculously there were no casualties reported. As everyday, the children had attended the Anganwadi centre, but the assistants had sent them home at 1.30 after lunch. Usually, the Anganwadi centre works from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. As the district experienced rains on Wednesday afternoon, and as it was partially cloudy on Thursday, the workers predicting rainfall, and sent the students home.

A loud cracking sound was heard at 4 pm, and the residents were shocked to find the huge peepal tree having split into two and collapsed. The residents of the nearby houses ran for safety. Fire personnel rushed to the spot and cleared the tree. The tree was hollow and dead inside.  One of the parents appreciated the anganwadi workers for their decision to send the children home. The centre was being run in a rented building, which is said to be old and dilapidated. The CMC should immediately provide an alternative place or own building, they demanded.
