The award has been instituted by Andhra-based Indian Journalism and Development Council, southern region. The award is given in the field of public life, administration, education, volunteer service and social service.
M Narayanswami has earned a degree in rural development and is involved in social service. He identified himself with Dalit Sangharsh Samiti in 1989 later became the strong voice of quarry workers. Recognising his service, he was honoured by Sunanda, a NGO.
Later, he joined an organisation - Prarambha - to fight for lakes in the taluk. He was selected the president of Federation of Voluntary Organisations in 1994.
His movement favouring ban on arrack had received widespread response. Nearly 10,000 people had participated in the mega rally demanding ban on arrack.
14,095 members
He founded Team For Education and Environmental Service (TREES) in 1995. The organisation today shelters 740 self-help groups with a membership of 14,095.
TREES has, till now, allotted at least 3,000 acre of land to landless people. The organisation also plays a vital role in taking various government projects to the beneficiaries. It has conducted as many as 1800 training programmes.
“My wife Meera and son Vishwa lend great support to me. I’m grateful to members’ and well-wishers’ co-operation,” he said.
