A debt-stressed farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Mudanur village in Surpur taluk in Yadgir district on Friday night.
Paramanna Madiwalappa Talawara (48) had consumed pesticide at his field. He was admitted to a hospital in Vijayapura where he died.
It is said he had borrowed Rs 1.17 lakh from the State Bank of Mysore and Rs 6 lakh from private lenders. He had grown cotton and the crop was lost due to lack of rain in the last two years. Unable to repay the loans, he ended his life. A debt-ridden farmer had ended his life at Gogi village in Shahapur taluk about 15 days ago.
Another indebted farmer, Basavarajappa (58) of Lakkimuttenahalli, died in Davangere on Saturday. Basavarajappa, who had tried to commit suicide by consuming poison at his field, had been admitted to CG Hospital in Davangere. He died as the treatment failed.
Basavarajappa, who owned 2.5 acres of land, had borrowed Rs 4 lakh loan from Agricultural Produce Cooperative Society and others to grow maize. His son Ravikumar said he committed suicide due to crop failure and harassment by moneylenders.
Don’t end lives: CM
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday made an appeal to farmers to not commit suicide under any circumstance as the government would come to their rescue.
Speaking at a programme organised by Jindal factory to inaugurate new buildings at Government High School in Toranagal in Ballari district, he said, “The cases of farmers’ suicides are increasing in the State. About 25 farmers have committed suicide in June alone. Among them, eight were sugar cane farmers and the others ended their lives due to loans and personal reasons.”
Siddaramaiah said all DCs and SPs had been directed to take action against moneylenders if they harass farmers for loan recovery.
