Two PU students killed as KSRTC bus collides head-on with tractor

Two second year PU students were killed on the spot after an over-crowded KSRTC bus in which they were travelling rammed a tractor on the outskirts of the town Wednesday morning.

Six students were injured in the accident that occurred around 8 am at Chikkahunusur, two kms from Hunsur town when the bus driver hit the tractor while trying to over take it. The tractor was transporting mud from the Chikkahunsur tank, the police said.

Syed Arief and his friend Naveen Kumar, both aged 17 and students of Government Junior College here, died instantaneously. The injured students Chennaraja, Harish, Shekar, Avinash, Swathi and Lakshmi have been admitted in hospitals at Hunsur and Mysore. As usual, several students from border villages were travelling by the KSRTC bus to reach their colleges and schools in Hunsur.
Protest
As the dead and injured were shifted to the Government Hospital, hundreds of grieving students and kin of the victims gathered there, braving the downpour. Students and public staged a demonstration seeking action against the errant driver and compensation for the injured and the kin of the dead.

Mysore district Additional Superintendent of Police Mohan Reddy and senior police and KSRTC officials reached the spot and pacified the protesters.
An adhoc compensation of Rs 15,000 each was handed over immediately to the families of the dead students. The two families will get an additional Rs. 2.35 lakh each later. Similarly, a compensation of Rs 5,000 each was announced for the injured. 

The Hunsur police have registered a case and arrested the bus driver, who is said to be a recent recruit.
