Udupi: The Padubidri police arrested two inter-state thieves in connection with a series of house thefts reported recently in the jurisdiction of Padubidri, Kota, and Kundapur police station limits in Udupi district.

The arrested are Ibrahim Kalandar, a resident of Kalayi House, Koila village, Puttur Taluk, Dakshina Kannada, and Mohammad Riyaz alias Kadappa Riyaz, a resident of Urmichal Bekoor, Kumbla, Kasaragod. The police also seized a car used for the theft and Rs 24,000 in cash. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody on Saturday, said SP Hariram Shankar.

Explaining, the SP said on June 22, miscreants broke into the house of Ganesh Prasad Shetty in Padebettu village, under the jurisdiction of Padubidri Police Station, and decamped with Rs 1.20 lakh in cash and a gold chain worth Rs 25,000.

Under the directions of SP and the guidance of Additional SP Sadananda S Nayak and Parameshwara Hegde, the investigation was led by Dr Harsha Priyamvada, ASP Karkala sub-division. The team gathered information about the theft and arrested the two from Sastha Nagar, Mogral Puttur, Kumble, in Kasaragod district.

Among the arrested, Ibrahim Kalandar already has several criminal cases registered against him-- two temple theft cases at Badiadka Police Station, Kasaragod, a house theft at Vidyanagar Police Station, one attempt to robbery at Manjeshwar Police Station, house theft at Melparamba Police Station, robbery at Muniyalu Society under Hebri Police Station, Udupi, Karnataka Bank robbery case at Vittal Police Station, arecanut theft at Moodbidri Police Station, four house thefts in Puttur town and rural stations, jewellery theft at Kadaba Police Station, shop thefts at Uppinangady and Bantwal Rural Police Stations, and a theft case at Kushalnagar Police Station, Madikeri. He was released from Hosadurga District Jail, Kerala, on February 15.

Mohammad Riyaz has a murder case at Kumbla Police Station and a ganja peddling case at Puttur Town Police Station. He was released from Kasaragod sub jail on May 12.
