Union Ministry's scholarships for poor meritorious students

Children studying in eighth standard at government and aided schools are eligible to apply.
They must have secured 55 pc marks in seventh standard and the annual income of their parents must not exceed Rs 1.50 lakh.

Education Research and Training department will conduct a state-level examination to select the students for scholarship payment, on November 8. While 5,534 scholarships are available for students from the State, only 1,000 to 1,500 students are availing the benefit due to lack of information. The successful students get Rs 500 per month from ninth standard up to II PUC.

August 31 is the last date to submit application. Prescribed application can be obtained from all high schools on payment of Rs 20 including examination fee of Rs 10. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students can obtain the applications free of cost.

The examination consists of two parts - general intelligence ability and learning aptitude. The first part carries 90 marks with equal number of objective questions. There will be 90 questions in Learning Aptitude paper - 35 each from science and social science and 20 from mathematics. More information can be obtained from the Block Education Officer and headmasters of all high schools.

The scheme is a boon for meritorious students hailing from economically weaker sections of the  society and parents and teachers should ensure that the eligible reap the benefits, Block Education Officer K Manjunath has said in a release.
