A victim of substance abuse, Sneha Upadhyaya (17) from Padavinangadi near Bondel committed suicide by hanging, at her home, in the wee hours of Sunday.

According to a complaint filed by her father Gururaj Upadhyaya, Sneha was a drug addict and was being treated for the last one year.

Her parents had stopped her from going to college after they realised that she was addicted to drugs. She was a topper in her class upto 9th standard and later, she started lagging behind in studies. Last month, when parents refused to meet her demand, she had gone to the extent of consuming pills prescribed for her father’s blood pressure. On Saturday night, the girl had demanded Rs1,500 from her mother.

Reacting to the incident, District-in-Charge Minister C T Ravi said that the police will be asked to crack down on the supply of drugs to Mangalore. “Drug mafia is a serious issue and will be curtailed at any cost,” he said.
