Vijayapura Tahsildar Aparna Pawate was on Monday caught red-handed  by the Lokayukta police accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh from a man who had applied for converting his land from agricultural into non-agricultural classification.

The Lokayukta Superintendent of Police, T V Prabhakar, raided the tahsildar’s office on a complaint by one Ramesh Bidanur.

The complainant had alleged that Pawate had demanded Rs five lakh as bribe for allowing the conversion of the land.

On Monday, Bidanur approached the tahsildar with Rs one lakh in cash as the first instalment of the illegal payment. The tahsildar agreed to take the money. Even as Pawate was accepting the money, the Lokayukta police raided the office and caught her red-handed.

Later, the Lokayukta police interrogated Pawate for over three hours and registered a non-bailable case against her. A court later sent her to jail.
