Kiran Irappa Khandekar, one of the students who drowned on Saturday in Maharashtra, had been a role model in his village.

He was inspiring other boys to aspire for professional courses. Gloom descended on Turmuri, about 20 km from here, when news broke of his tragic death on Saturday.

A final-year electronics and communication engineering student at Maratha Mandal Engineering College, he was the eldest among his siblings, and just months from graduating as an engineer. His family was distraught, and in no position to talk to anyone.

People in the village were also devastated, and stood waiting at the Khandekars’ house for the body to arrive.

Parashuram Tangankar, who lives in Turmuri, described Kiran as “hardworking and intelligent.”

He had done his schooling in Marathi medium, and then worked hard to score good marks in his pre-university course so that he could get into engineering.
