The white cranes with long neck and yellow feathers seem were seen foraging. While the bird-watchers are trying hard to know from where have these winged visitors come, others also curious as these cranes look different from the ordinary cranes found usually in the region. They are bigger and stronger. While these cranes prey on insects during daytime and take shelter on tall and wide trees at night, said Seetamma, whose house is located near the puddle.

The cranes prey on worms and other creatures in the grass and take a ride on the backs of cows to catch grasshoppers in the grass.

Usually, the birds flock to Doddakere in summer attracted by the smell of fish emantinga from the dried up tank. While some local residents hunt these birds with rifles, some resort to a more crude method. A snail is tied as a bait to a stick laced with gum. The feather of the birds sticks to the gum as they come to catch the snail.

These new cranes have chosen not to go near Doddakere fearing the hunters probably and find the swamp safe.
