Woman with artificial heart-valve gives birth

A 39-year-old woman from Kerala, who had a heart-valve replaced 7 years ago delivered a healthy baby at Omega Hospital, according to a press release.

A team of doctors comprising, Dr A G Jayakrishnan (chief cardiac surgeon), Dr K Mukund (chief cardilogist), Dr Vijaya Revankar (obstretrician) and Dr Harshvardhan (Anaesthetist) undertook the care of the patient during her stay in the hospital and delivery by caesarean section.

According to the hospital, patients who undergo heart-valve replacement are usually advised to avoid pregnancy. However, with utmost care and planning, delivery can be achieved. It requires excellent co-operation and co-ordination from the patient, family as well as from the doctors.

The patient had undergone Mitral valve replacement seven years ago. She got married after a few years and the first pregnancy was aborted for proper advice. Then the couple approached Dr Jayakrishnan and after discussing the entire problem pregnancy and delivery was done at Omega Hospital. The woman and baby have been discharged on Wednesday.
