A 52-year-old woman was killed and six suffered injuries when a goods train knocked down a mini bus at an unmanned railway crossing at Adyar Padavu on the outskirts of Mangalore on Sunday.

According to the police, the deceased is Dulaika, a resident of Chembugudde in Thokkottu. The accident occurred when a group of people were on their way in the mini bus to take part in a ‘seemantha’ programme at Ombathukere in Ullal.

The mini bus driver tried to hurry through the railway crossing, in a bid to save time, resulting in the collision. The goods train was transporting coal from the New Mangalore Port to Hubli.

Those injured in the accident are Thahira, 52, Wasim, 28, Naseema Bhanu, 24, Mumtaz Begum, 27, Noor Nida, five, and driver Harish, 52.

The condition of Thahira, Wasim and Nida is said to be serious. Naseema’s five-year-old son Mehaboob had a miraculous escape.
