Kannada Development Authority Chairman ‘Mukhyamantri’ Chandru said, construction of Kannada Bhavans in border areas would help promote the interest of Kannada language and Kannadigas.

After inaugurating the new building of Niveditha Women’s Vocational Training Centre here on Saturday, he said he had granted funds under his MLC Area Development Fund to 38 such Kannada Bhavans as they would uphold the pride of the people. However, he said, he had granted funds for works that empower women.

“Utilising funds available from the government for the people gives immense satisfaction. It is also the duty and responsibility of people’s representatives,” he said.

Deenabandhu Trust, which runs the centre, has constructed the new building. Secretary of the trust G S Jayadeva said, Grama Swaraj, propounded by Mahatma Gandhi, is relevant now, than ever, as migration of people to cities in search of livelihood has become rampant in villages.

“If a village becomes self-sufficient, with all resources and infrastructure, and provides jobs for all, the dream of the Mahatma will come true. Sister Niveditha, who was attracted towards India due to the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, strived for women’s empowerment. Hence the centre has been named after her,” he said.

Rajya Sabha member and theatre person B Jayashree, trust president M R Udayshankar, trustee Sumana and G Jayaram were present.
