Karnataka Agriculture Price Commission chairman T N Prakash Kammaradi has said that a technical workshop to frame integrated policy to promote paddy will be organised in Udupi in the first week of May.
He said the workshop would focus on effective utilisation of land that is left fallow so as to promote paddy cultivation.
At a meeting with officials from agriculture, horticulture department and farmers here on Monday, he said that he had urged thegovernment to frame a policy for the benefit of farmers.
The workshop will discuss the Model Agricultural Land Leasing Act, 2016 and also the best practices followed in Kerala.
He said that the total area under paddy cultivation in Udupi district is 1,20,000 hectare of which, 11,000 hectare has been left fallow. There is a need to discuss issues with farmers and find solutions to the problem.
The meeting also discussed shortage of farm labourers, handing over machineries to farmer groups and compensation for the loss of crops following wild animal menace.
The meeting also discussed cultivating fallow land on the model of Kutumbasri yojana of Kerala.
