Youth Cong polls: counting of votes inconclusive

The counting of votes for the elections to the post of state Youth Congress President and office-bearers continued after late Saturday night in Bengaluru.

The counting started around 3.30 pm on Saturday in the presence of observers deputed by the All India Youth Congress on the premises of King’s Court in Palace Grounds. As many as 2.85 lakh votes have been cast for the post of president and 15 other office-bearers including three vice presidents and 11 general secretaries during elections held across the state between May 14 and 17.

According to sources, Basavanagouda Badarali, a two-time Ballari district Youth Congress president was leading by 11,000 votes till late Saturday. Forty percent of the votes were yet to be counted and the counting could go on into the wee hours of Sunday, the sources added. Thirty-four-year-old Basavanagouda is the nephew of Sindhanur MLA BadaraliHampana Gouda in Raichur district.

No information was available from the counting centre as there were strict instructions that mobile phones, including those of the candidates, had to be deposited at the entrance, the sources added.

It is said candidates Umesh Boregowda, K N Rajendra (son of Madhugiri MLA K N Rajanna),  Kemparaju (relative of minister D K Shivakumar) and Amrut Raj Gowda were still in the race of the president’s post.
