Youth lack enthusiasm to vote

Youth, who are eligible to vote in the 16th Lok Sabha election, have shown little interest to enrol in the voters’ list.

According to the statistics provided by the Election Commission, there are 22,30,684 persons in the age group of 18 to 19 years in the State, but only 8,01,147 youngsters have enroled. Overall, 69.60 per cent of the total population of Karnataka has enroled to vote in the upcoming election.

As on January 31, the total population was 6,41,42,830, but 2,27,78,644 men, 2,18,65,233 women and 3,260 sexual minorities have been included in the list. In the age group of 20 to 29 years there are 1,04,19,296 — 16.24 per cent of the total number of voters.

In other age groups, from 30 to 39 years, there are 18.30 per cent voters; 40 to 49, 14.05 per cent; 50 to 59, 9.59 per cent; 60 to 69, 5.96 per cent; 70 to 79, 3.02 per cent and above 80 years, 1.19 per cent.
