Karti Chidambaram appeared before the CBI for the second time on Monday to explain his role in getting foreign investment clearances for a media house.

Sources said three of his associates  --Bhaskar Raman, Ravi Vishwanathan and Mohanan Rakesh—were also questioned in the case.

Karti, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, was quizzed last Wednesday regarding the case and was asked to appear once again on Monday.

Karti responded to the CBI summons following a Supreme Court order that also struck down the Madras High Court’s stay on the lookout notice issued against him. Chidambaram and Karti had denied any wrongdoing in the issue.

On May 15, the CBI registered a case against Karti, his company Chess Management Services, INX Media, Advantage Strategic Consulting Services, its director Padma Vishwanathan, besides Inx Media promoters Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, currently in jail for murdering their daughter.

The case has been registered based on an Rs 10 lakh ‘consultancy charges’ in Inx Media records to Advantage Strategic Consulting (P) Limited –claimed to be “indirectly” owned by Karti- to clear an FIPB notification.

The FIR also alleged that invoices of approximately Rs 3.5 crore were raised in favour of INX Media in the name of other companies in which Karti had substantial interests "directly or indirectly".
