Despite sunny days, the Kashmir Valley continues to reel under intense cold with Srinagar city recording coldest night of the season on Wednesday.

An official of local Met office said the minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 3.7 degrees Celsius, a drop of 3.4 degrees compared to the previous night. 

A portion of world famous Dal lake has frozen due to which boatmen had to break the ice to make way in the morning.

The tourist resort of Pahalgam, which also serves as a base camp during annual Amarnath yatra, recorded slight improvement in temperature with mercury settling at minus 7.3 degrees against minus 7.5 degrees the previous night.

Kargil in frontier Ladakh region witnessed bone chilling minus 14.2 degrees Celsius as against previous night’s minus 13 degrees, he said.

This was the season’s lowest temperature in Kargil which continues to remain the coldest place in the state. The night temperature in nearby Leh town was recorded at minus 13.8 degrees Celsius.

Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius as compared to minus 0.8 degrees the previous night. The official said the present weather conditions are likely to continue for the next few days across Jammu and Kashmir and a further fall in night temperatures would occur during this period.

“Present cold condition is going to become more severe during the next few days as the weather is likely to remain dry across the state,” he added.
