Child rights activists in Kerala have raised concern over the state’s failure to implement laws and address issues that trigger domestic violence, days after the plight of a five-year-old boy, who was allegedly tortured by his father and stepmother, came to light.
The NCRB figures revealed that in 2012, 44.1 per cent—the highest in the country—of the 8,490 suicides in Kerala were due to family problems. Kerala stands seventh among the states at 4.76 in child rape cases, behind Mizoram (21.66), Sikkim (10.4), Meghalaya (9.3), Goa (6.3), Madhya Pradesh (5.64) and Chhattisgarh (5.58). The national rate is 1.92.
