An investigation into the alleged gas leak at the state-run Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML) in Chavara in Kollam district kicked off on Friday even as more voices emerged about a possible conspiracy against the company.

Officials at KMML said the sponge plant was sealed on Wednesday after leakage of an inflammable gas, but the leak had allegedly continued on Thursday, leaving more than 70 students from neighbouring schools hospitalised with nausea and dizziness, over the last two days.

The state government had ordered a probe by a technical team and another investigation under ADGP (Intelligence) A Hemachandran in the backdrop of allegations of a conspiracy.

Two experts from the Cochin Refinery, doctors from the Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, officials of the Factories and Boilers Department and State Pollution Control Board and Industries Department are involved in the investigation. Operations at the KMML plant were suspended on Thursday.
