A local court in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday issued a summon to Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in a defamation case filed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

Tharoor had earlier filed the defamation petition against Prasad alleging that the latter called him a murder accused in connection with his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death. He alleged that Prasad made the derogatory remark with the intention of defaming him even as the police investigation into Sunanda's murder found that it was not a murder.

Tharoor had earlier sent a legal notice to Prasad seeking an unconditional apology for the remark. As Prasad defended his statement, Tharoor went ahead with the case seeking appropriate actions.

Tharoor alleged that Prasad even posted the video footage of his derogatory remark on the social media with the intention of spreading it and defaming him.

The court posted the case to May 2.
