Amid fears that migrant workers are fleeing Kerala after rumours of attacks and killings, the state government has urged them to stay put and assured they would be safe.

Panic set in among migrant workers after a WhatsApp clip claiming that they are attacked and killed had gone viral.

On Tuesday, state police chief Loknath Behera delivered a message in Hindi and Bengali, asking migrant workers not to believe in fake campaigns that they are unsafe in Kerala.

Minister for Labour T P Ramakrishnan said the government was committed to ensuring the safety of migrant workers and would continue to provide them with welfare measures.

Their statements came a day after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed the police to initiate action against people behind the campaign.

Behera said the voice message — delivered by a person claiming to be a migrant — was “absolutely baseless”.
