A nondescript village on the fringe of booming Kochi braces for a unique local body election on November 5.
A corporate house has entered the poll fray in Kizhakkambalam, by fielding candidates with a promise of overall development of the village.
The Anna-Kitex Group of Companies, in the banner of “Twenty20” formed under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wing, has fielded 19 candidates in Kizhakkambalam grama panchayat, three in Vazhakkulam block panchayat and one in Ernakulam district panchayat elections.
The company calls it an inevitable move to take forward its CSR projects marred by hostile “political interests” but it also triggers apprehensions on business houses entering electoral politics.
Sabu Jacob, Managing Director of the group dubs it a call for corporates to come forward and help build social infrastructure the political system “failed” to deliver.
