Ongoing agitation by locals and anti-nuclear activists has increased the cost of commissioning the first two units of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) by Rs 4,099 crore.
“The cost of KKNPP units 1 and 2 is estimated to go up from Rs 13,171 crore to Rs 17,270 crore due to delay in commissioning of the plant,” Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, V Narayanswamy, informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The first unit at Kudankulam is currently at an advanced stage of commissioning. It got permission from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board on August 10, for initial fuel loading and readying its instruments to start nuclear reaction for generating electricity.
The minister also said a large uranium deposit was found at Rohil in Rajasthan’s Sikar district. The deposit is bigger than Karnakata’s Gogi deposit, he added.
