The Left Front said it will seek the ‘opinion’ of the people before giving tickets to candidates for the forthcoming Panchayat elections and even, if needed, the leadership will change the candidate who does not have a social acceptance.

According to party sources Left Front Chairman Biman Basu in a recent circular instructed all the district and zonal level leadership to seek public opinion before submitting the final list of the candidates.

According to the instruction, the local leadership will opt for public opinion after initial selection of the candidate and in case the feedback from the people goes negative the local leadership has been instructed to look for a candidate who has larger social acceptance, sources in the party said.

“The process will help us in two ways. Firstly, we will be able to get the best candidate with a clean image and the support of the people. Secondly, we can expedite the process of cleaning the party through this mechanism more effectively,” a senior CPM party leader and central committee member told Deccan Herald on condition of anonymity.

“In the last few elections, our party suffered badly because of some highhanded corrupt leaders. We need to trace them out. Through this process, we think, we will be able to do that,” the leader said.

However, according to political observers, the Left Front is desperately trying to reach out to the common people and restore the base which eroded in the last few years and this process is unique way of reaching out to them.

“We are using this process in an experimental way in the Panchayat election and if it works then we will use it in a larger scale in the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections,” the leader added.
