In a written submission to the Baguihati police in the northern fringe of the city, Samar Moulik, a retired employee of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), and his wife Bharati, have stated that they are unable to bear the insults and cruel treatment meted out to them by their own children.

“We believe there’s nothing left in our lives now. That’s why we went to the police station recently and submitted a letter to the authorities, seeking permission from the officials for voluntary death. We want to at least die peacefully,” Samar Moulik said.

The couple have two sons and a daughter. The elder son, a microbiologist, lives in South Africa, while the younger one resides in Kolkata. Their daughter is living in Uttar Pradesh with her husband.

Plot seized

Moulik, who retired in 1997, had purchased a plot of land in downtown Barasat, which his son seized illegally. They returned to West Bengal after their younger son requested them to do so; however, the latter along with his uncle grabbed the property by obtaining their signatures through wrong means, the couple claimed.

Having been duped by their own sons, the homeless Mouliks have been staying in the house of a former colleague. We can no longer bear this ignominy and want to die at the earliest, Samar Moulik said in the submission. The police have began an inquiry into the complaint.
