Li-Fi X, an upgraded product in 2015 with its small dongle, will be showcased at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 22.

Professor Harald Haas of Edinburgh University also developed a product with solar cells for energy generation. Apple has made its plan to include Li-Fi capability in future iPhones.

He said Li-Fi is a form of visible light communication and a subset of OWC and could be a complement to RF communication (Wi-Fi or Cellular network), or even a replacement in contexts of data broadcasting.

“Li-Fi optical wireless communications (OWC) technology uses light from the light-emitting diodes (LED) as a medium to deliver networked mobile high-speed communication in a similar manner to Wi-Fi. It is bidirectional, high speed and fully networked communication technology,” he said. “Unlike visible light communication (VLC) which works by switching the power to the LEDs off and on at a very high rate, Li-Fi LEDs can transmit data even if the light is dimmed below human visibility,” Haas elaborated.
