The minister was replying to a question from Congress member V R Sudarshan who raised the issue in the Legislative Council on Tuesday. Limbavali held the AICTE responsible for the current delay in counselling for BE seats in the State.
“There is no need of the AICTE. It never inspects our colleges and gives clearance through the online system. We have a separate university (VTU) to monitor engineering colleges. The Centre should wind up the AICTE”, he said.
Members’ demand
Many members in the House urged the minister to write to the Centre to scrap the AICTE. The minister said in a conference of Higher Education ministers held in Delhi, he has already conveyed to the Centre that there was no need of a body like the AICTE.
Limbavali said the counselling for BE seats would begin on July 14 if the AICTE clears the intake and approves courses by July 12. The government was contemplating to hold the counselling even on Sundays so that the academic time table would not suffer. Besides, counselling would be extended for one hour every day.
Limbavali said when he met Union Minister Kapil Sibal and the Executive Director of AICTE in June, he was told that the information regarding the approval of engineering colleges would be made available online by June 30. But no information was available online on that date and several colleges were left out from the list, he said.
