41.4% in poll-bound states 'very much satisfied' with PM Modi

A total of 41.4 per cent of the respondents in the five poll-bound states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur are 'very much satisfied' with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as per the ABP-C-Voter-IANS 5-State Snap Poll.

As per the survey, overall 26.9 per cent opted for 'satisfied to some extent' category, while 29.1 per cent were not satisfied at all with the Prime Minister. However, 2.6 per cent opted for 'cant' say', as per the snap poll. (IANS)

Orange alert issued to 6 districts of Kerala

The northeast monsoon has been active over Kerala and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued an orange alert for six districts of Kerala on November 13 and for five districts on November 14 indicating heavy rains. The six districts are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki while the five are Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki. Meanwhile, Idukki district Collector said the shutters of the Cheruthoni Dam of the Idukki reservoir might be opened on Saturday or Sunday in case the rain continues in the district. The Collector warned the people living downstream the Idukki dam and along the banks of Periyar river to remain cautious. The IMD website says Kerala has received 86 per cent excess rainfall during the period of October 1 to 12. Normal rainfall expected from October 1 to 12 was 392.9 mm, however, the State has so far received 732.4 mm rain during the said period, the website said. (PTI)

Biden picks former FDA chief Califf to again lead agency

President Joe Biden on Friday is tapping former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Robert Califf to again lead the powerful regulatory agency, according to a person familiar with the decision.
Califf's nomination comes after months of the concern that the agency near the center of the government's Covid-19 response has lacked a permanent leader. More than a half-dozen names were floated for the job before the White House settled on Califf. (AP)

Puducherry varsity, Army enter into pact to enable defence officers take up academics

Pondicherry Central University and the army have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to facilitate the army officers to undergo postgraduate courses and research programmes in the varsity. The MoU was signed on Thursday by Registrar in-charge of the university Amaresh Samantharaya and Major General Vivek Kashyap. Vice-Chancellor of the varsity Gurmeet Singh was present on the occasion. The courses would be in nano-science and technology, Artificial Intelligence, strategic studies and others, a press release from the university said on Friday. The Major General said the Army would like to collaborate with academic institutions to utilise young minds and attract them to join the armed forces and interacted with the faculties, and others in the university. 10 EU nations face Covid situation of 'high concern'

Ten countries in the 27-member European Union face a Covid situation of "high concern", the bloc's diseases agency said Friday, warning the pandemic was worsening across the continent. Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovenia are in the highest category of concern, according to the latest risk assessment by the European Centre for Disease Control. Arunachal Pradesh govt approves 192 road projects in 25 districts

The Arunachal Pradesh government on Friday approved 192 road projects under phase three of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III), covering 25 districts in the state.

The approval was given at the State Level Standing Committee (SLSC) meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar.

The committee approved a total of 192 roads with 1,375 km length, which would cover 78 blocks in 25 districts of the state, an official statement said. (PTI)

India opened its $1 trillion government bond market to individual investors Friday as it seeks help from the public to fund its ambitious spending plans. Asia's third-largest economy plans to borrow 12.05 trillion rupees ($161.87 billion) via bonds this financial year, ending March 2022, as it embarks on huge investment plans to boost growth in the coronavirus-battered country. Congress alleges Facebook used by BJP as weapon to spread hate; seeks JPC probe, laws to restrict it

The Congress on Friday alleged that Facebook was being used as a weapon by the BJP to spread hate and fake news in the country and demanded that a JPC probe be conducted on the issue and laws be enacted to restrict Facebook and WhatsApp.

The party also alleged that India's democracy is being manipulated by an American technology company and demanded that it holds an independent inquiry into the issue.

Congress leaders Rohan Gupta and Praveen Chakravarty said at a joint press conference that it is time Facebook stops being used as a weapon by the BJP to spread hate that threatens the country's unity. (PTI)

Rahane to lead India for smoggy first New Zealand Test

Ajinkya Rahane will captain India in the first Test against New Zealand in the heavily polluted industrial city of Kanpur later this month, the Indian cricket board said Friday.

Rahane will step in for the resting Virat Kohli, 33, who will return as skipper for the second and final Test against the reigning World Test Championship (WTC) holders in Mumbai.

Citing his "immense workload", Kohli recently quit as India's T20I captain -- replaced by Rohit Sharma -- but will still lead the Asian giant's Test and one-day sides. (AFP)

Gold biscuits worth over Rs 1 crore seized, 1 arrested in Bengal

A man was arrested from a Howrah-bound train at the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in West Bengal's Siliguri and gold biscuits worth Rs 1.08 crore were seized from his possession on Friday, DRI officials said.

Acting on a tip-off, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths detained the man from a reserved compartment of the train coming from Guwahati and upon finding discrepancies in his answers during questioning, searched him and found 13 gold biscuits in his possession, they said.

The man, identified as Sheikh Saiful Rahman, is a resident of Howrah, the officials added. (PTI)

Delhi BJP leader demands judicial action against Kangana Ranaut over ‘bheek’ remark

Delhi BJP leader Praveen Shankar Kapoor slammed actor Kangana Ranaut over her remarks on the country’s independence, and demanded the judiciary to take action against her.

The Delhi BJP spokesperson said Ranaut's remarks are an “insult to the sacrifice of freedom fighters”.

“Being the son of a freedom fighter and coming from a family of freedom fighters, I find Kangana Ranaut's remarks that India’s freedom was alms (bheekh) as the biggest misuse of freedom and an insult to the sacrifice made by freedom fighters. I wish the judicial system of India takes cognizance,” Kapoor said in a tweet in Hindi on Thursday.

He, however, told PTI on Friday that he tweeted on the issue in his personal capacity.

Ranaut had kicked off a firestorm on Thursday for saying that India attained “real freedom” in 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power, and describing the country’s Independence in 1947 as “bheek”, or alms.

Covid vaccination: 'Har Ghar Dastak' campaign begins in Delhi

A campaign to carry out house-to-house Covid-19 vaccination of people who are yet to take a dose and those whose second shot is overdue got underway in the national capital on Friday.

The central government had recently launched a month-long “Har Ghar Dastak” campaign to ensure no person is left behind in the vaccination exercise.

According to a poster issued by the Delhi government, the drive will be carried out from November 12 to 27. (PTI)
