Greece names new health chief as Covid deaths near 15,000

Greece on Tuesday named a new head to the state health watchdog that oversees the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic as the country’s death toll neared 15,000.

The health ministry said the new head of the Eody agency is Theoklis Zaoutis, a former chief of the division of paediatric infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

As of Monday, the virus had claimed more than 14,990 lives with an average age of 78, according to Eody.

Baseer Ahmad Khan removed as advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor

The government on Tuesday relieved Baseer Ahmad Khan of the charge of advisor to the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor with immediate effect.

According to an order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir general administration department, Khan, a retired IAS officer of 2000 batch, was relieved of the charge following a communication from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

His removal from the post came all of a sudden and the reasons behind it were not immediately known.

Khan was made an advisor in March last year when G C Murmu was the Lt Governor, and he continued in the post under Murmu’s successor Manoj Sinha.

Prior to his appointment as an advisor, Khan was the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir.

Kerala records 9,735 fresh Covid-19 cases, 151 deaths

Kerala on Tuesday for the second day running reported less than 10,000 fresh Covid-19 cases -- 9,735 to be exact -- and 151 deaths, taking the infection caseload to 47,38,818 and the toll to 25,677.

The number of people who recovered from the infection since Monday was 13,878, which brought the total recoveries to 45,88,084 and the active cases to 1,24,441, an official press release said

London’s fire brigade battling fire at Westminster station

London’s fire brigade says six fire engines and around 40 firefighters are battling a fire at Westminster Station, the nearest subway station to Britain’s Parliament and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s residence at 10. Downing Street.

In a statement on Twitter on Tuesday, the London Fire Brigade said the fire is toward the Bridge Street entrance of the station, which is the road that connects to Westminster Bridge and south of the River Thames.

Chhattisgarh CM Baghel stopped at Lucknow airport, sits on dharna

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was prevented from coming out of Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport Tuesday when he arrived to visit the state Congress office and meet party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Baghel sat on a dharna at the airport after being disallowed to go to the Uttar Pradesh Congress office amid widespread protest over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

"I am being stopped from going out of Lucknow airport without any orders," he wrote in a tweet with a photo of him sitting on the floor at the airport.

The Chhattisgarh chief minister reasoned with the police on duty as to why he was being stopped but to no avail, a Congress spokesman said.

"Why am I being stopped? I am not going to Lakhimpur where there are prohibitory orders in place. I am only going to PCC (Congress office)," he asked the police personnel.

French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday he wants the Group of 20 major economic powers to set conditions for recognising the Taliban, including ensuring women's and girl's rights.
