Delhi Sports University will award degrees to help sportspersons get jobs: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said the upcoming Delhi Sports University will provide degrees to sportspersons to help them get jobs if they want to work.

He said the Delhi government has eliminated three difficulties faced by sportspersons – lack of facilities, lack of monetary support, and political intervention in selection processes.

"At the Delhi Sports University, players will be provided degrees in their respective sports such as BA in kabaddi, BA in wrestling and BA in cricket among others. This will help them get jobs in case they want to work," Kejriwal said at a ceremony to provide financial assistance to sportspersons.

Somali president tests positive for Covid-19

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on Friday he had tested positive for Covid-19 and was in self-isolation.

Abdikarim Ali Kaar, Mohamud's spokesperson, said the president had returned to Somalia on Friday from a trip to the United Arab Emirates.

The official Somali president's Twitter account shows a video of him meeting the president of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, with both men wearing masks, dated June 22. He also met Somalis based in the UAE.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina expected to visit India in early September

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit India in early September for a bilateral visit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, her spokesman said on Friday, a day after the Indian envoy here called on her and delivered the official invitation letter for a "substantive summit."

Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Vikram K Doraiswami on Thursday handed over a letter from Prime Minister Modi to premier Hasina officially inviting her to visit New Delhi.

“He (envoy) called on her and delivered the letter” late on Thursday, a PMO spokesman told PTI.

Not targeting any level, but RBI will not allow 'jerky movements' of Rupee: Dy Guv Patra

Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Michael D Patra on Friday said the Central Bank is defending the Rupee against volatility and will not allow "jerky movements", though it is not looking at any particular level for the domestic currency against the US dollar.

Patra, who looks after the monetary policy department in the RBI, also stressed that the Indian currency has witnessed least depreciation in recent times.

"We don't know where the Rupee will be. Even the US Fed doesn't know where the dollar will be. But be sure of one thing. We will stand for its (Rupee) stability, and we're doing it on an ongoing basis even as I speak.

India beat Singapore 3-0 in volleyball tourney

The Indian senior volleyball team beat Singapore 3-0 to begin their campaign on a winning note in the 21st Princess Cup 3rd AVC Women's Challenge Cup at Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

India emerged 25-16, 25-19 25-08 winners in their opening league match of the tournament.

From the Indian side, captain Nirmal, Soorya and Anushree impressed the most.

Bill on fire clearance for Kolkata highrises passed in West Bengal assembly

A bill was passed in the West Bengal assembly on Friday that sought to bring parity in the fire clearance norms for highrises in Kolkata.

The West Bengal Fire Services (Amendment) Bill was passed by voice vote with the opposition BJP abstaining.

"A NOC (no objection certificate) of the Fire Department was earlier needed for buildings over 14.5 metres in height. That limit is being raised to 15.5 metre with this new bill," Minister of State for Fire and Emergency Services Sujit Bose said.

This relaxation will be applicable to only Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area.
