A new low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rain in Tamil Nadu from Wednesday. Only recently the state received respite from rain.

“A new-low pressure area  formed over the south-east Bay of Bengal on Tuesday morning under the influence of upper air cyclonic circulation. Due to this, heavy rain is expected to occur throughout Tamil Nadu from Wednesday evening or from Thursday morning,” a senior weather official said on Tuesday.

The official also said that the low pressure might turn into a depression depending upon its movement. According to the latest weather bulletin, rain or thundershowers may occur at most places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Wednesday.

Fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea as strong onshore winds from the north-easterly direction with speed occasionally reaching 55 kmph would prevail along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast.

Dry weather prevailed over the entire Tamil Nadu during the last one week after most districts in the state received excess rain during this north-east monsoon, compared with the previous year. The downpour, which crippled normal life in the state, has brought copious inflows to various reservoirs and lakes.

The Stanley reservoir in Mettur, the lifeline of Cauvery delta farmers, continues to receive high inflow, taking the water level to over 100 feet. It was 83 feet during the same period last year.
